Why is My Refrigerator Noisy?

A noisy refrigerator is extremely annoying. If the refrigerator in your kitchen is a little louder than normal there are a couple of simple things that you can check while trying to find the cause. There are several fans on a refrigerator that could create loud sounds. The refrigerator could also not be balanced too. Or you may have a compressor that’s wearing out. If your refrigerator is louder when the ice maker is operating, the sounds might be a broken a water valve.

There are a couple of basic components that must be be checked. Like is the refrigerator too full? A refrigerator that’s too will often result in glass jars and other food items to clink and clank together. This will create a lot of unpleasant noises inside the refrigerator that’s not ideal because the refrigerator is running and naturally creating a small vibration.

If you own a model of refrigerator that has a built-in water dispenser or ice maker but do not have the water line connected, be sure you turned off the water dispenser and the ice maker. There is almost always a button on the water dispenser on the refrigerator that can be pressed to shut off the water dispenser. And with the ice maker, you need to lift the bar. If the refrigerator is installed right by a wall, it could cause the normal operating sound to seem much louder. This is due to the echo of the noise of the refrigerator. Move the refrigerator out a bit from the wall and then see if that helps at all or not. A refrigerator needs to be close to 2 inches from the rear wall to lower the noise.

If it isn’t one of these basic and easy fixes, it is time to explore the issue further. The majority of the time, the fans are the reason for a loud refrigerator. There are fan blades that will often get clogged and dirty. There are times the fan motors do too. There is a condenser fan in the refrigerator and an evaporator on the refrigerator too. Sometimes the refrigerator condenser fan will get a coating of dust or fuzz on it and should be cleaned on a regular basis. If the dust gets too heavy it might wear out the bearings inside of the refrigerator fan’s motor.

Clean the Fan & Refrigerator Condenser Coils

First, the refrigerator. A lot of the time you will want to have a wrench or screwdriver to get the back panel off from the refrigerator. As soon as it’s exposed you’ll notice a fan inside. If it’s full of dirt and dust, take a cloth and gently clean it off. While you’re in there you should check the coils as well. These are typically right there and covered in the same dust and grime that the fan is. Cleaning the coils only takes a couple of minutes and it will certainly help the refrigerator run efficiently. This is a very common problem that sometimes causes a refrigerator to run non-stop.

Turn the fan blades. Do they spin easily? If they do not the fan motor bearings are not working. This is a simple fix, as the fan assembly is typically a unit that can be purchased online and can be replaced by just disconnecting it. However, before you do any of this, ensure the refrigerator is unplugged. Do this same process for the evaporator fan in the refrigerator, which is typically located behind the freezer. This is not typically the issue, as this particular fan is protected by being within the walls of the refrigerator. But, when the noises are coming from the top of the appliance that is the area to look.
